I won’t take too much time introducing my beautiful couple Zack and Katy, because you can read so much more about them on their engagement session blog! I will mention again though that Zack and Katy pretty much grew up knowing one another through their parents who were best friends, ironically they share the same birthday, and finally hit it off at a birthday party their parents threw for them TOGETHER when they were teens, an awkward moment that would shift the course of their future! Again, you have to read their story.
I was introduced to Zack and Katy through their wedding designer/coordinator Bri with Desert Child Events, I have so much more to say about Bri, but I’ll leave that for another day and simply share my gratitude for connecting me to Zack and Katy! Thank you so much Bri!
Let me paint a picture of their day:
Z+K have really genuine and strong connections with the people that they love. It is absolutely certain that they are themselves around others, take it or leave it…and most TAKE IT because what’s not to love about them. Throughout their wedding it was evident that they created experiences that were not just for their own enjoyment but those closest to them. The details, the ceremony, their first look moment which felt absolutely SOLEMN, the fun they had with their bridal party, leading us straight into reception.
This is where I want to stop for a moment. Imagine a room that is so divinely decorated with the most intricate details. In every chair a person that means something super special to the bride and groom. The room, not the biggest room, but everyone fit perfectly and comfortably-a space so divinely created for intimacy and celebration. Throughout the day were glimpses and mentions of Zack’s dad who had passed away not long ago. Earlier in the day, before ceremony, I could feel the longing in Zack’s mom’s eyes. I put myself in her shoes and felt a tear run down my face. Zack’s dad was not present physically, but I can feel him through the immense love and admiration that people expressed. Making me certain that Zack’s dad was a special man. And then there was THIS MOMENT, the toast…where Katy’s dad, who was best friends to Zack’s dad gave the most heartfelt and touching speech. There was not a dry eye in the room. I watched a room of people draw closer through their tears and their pain (as Katy’s dad also had tears streaming down his face). Then followed very moving and also funny speeches from the best man and maids of honor, but I won’t forget the words that the best man spoke after mentioning his rushing to the hospital to be by Zack’s side during Zack’s most trying time, “I realized when I was there that Zack no longer needed me….because he had Katy.” I was captivated by a room full of people that were vulnerable with each other. People that understood that life will throw us our ups and downs and that’s ok, so long as you have the right people by your side. It is almost as if painful situations help us to gain the right perspective and somehow bring us closer together. Their wedding day was a cause of celebration indeed…and Zack and Katy were happy to be alive and happy to be with each other. It showed….every second of the day….it showed. They hugged people tighter, laughed a little louder and danced a little wilder. This wedding took me through some of the deepest emotions I’ve ever felt photographing a wedding….and I was 100% ok with that!
What my beautiful couple had to say about working with me:
A note from Rubi Z to Zack + Katy:
Zack and Katy, I remember from the moment we were preparing for your engagement session, that you let me in. I immediately felt like the friend that you ask “does this look good on me?” And that you were trusting my responses. Thank you for hearing my perspective and always being open to anything. You both have something really special, your love for each other is so effortless, you can tell that you accept one another for who you are and that will really benefit you as the years pass by. I want you to know that I feel so honored to have been present on this incredible day. Sometimes I marvel at the idea that as photographers, we come in as strangers, and beautiful people such as yourselves open up your personal lives to us, in order to document moments you never want to forget. It blows my mind and I don’t take it lightly. Thank you for allowing me to see your world, for opening up your doors to your intimate space and giving me the joy to capture it. I hope to always see you both thriving and cherishing life such as you did on your wedding day. I hope to hear and see about the beautiful family you both will form together. And I hope to even hear about the struggles because if you ever need some help, I’m certainly here to listen! You two were truly meant to be and I want to congratulate you on becoming Mr + Mrs Troyan!
