Not going to lie…driving a full 8 hours straight terrified us, so for the first round, the way up to Arizona, we cheated! Or I’d like to say it was more of a strategy to get to Cartel Coffee Lab!
We stopped in Palm Springs and stayed the night at an AirBNB in Joshua Tree. We were “smart” and happened to book this road trip on Spring Break 2021, which also happened to be the week that a lot of the covid restrictions and mandates were lifted. So in other words…AirBNB’s were scarce! We ended up finding one that we took a gamble on. It was in our budget but was new and had no reviews.
We were pleasantly surprised at the outcome. It was nothing too fancy, but safe and CLEAN! My husband was thrilled to walk in to the smell of a freshly cleaned house. I knew we were good to go from there. It was just an overnight stay after all before we’d hit the road!
Not too much intention behind Day 1, except to begin our journey and test the waters of how the kids would do on the road! Ohhhh…we rented a van…that was the best part!
Day 1, going into morning of day 2 was a complete success.
We basically left town. Everyone THRILLED. We were surprisingly not overwhelmed, unlike several out of town trips we take. We drove out about 3.5 hours to Palm Springs. Grabbed food at Fernanda’s Salvadorian [hubby was craving pupusas, if you know, you know]–grabbed the some dirty chai latte’s from Cartel Coffee just minutes before they closed. Sat outside of their patio just feeling the breeze and eating our food/drinking our coffee. We then checked into the airbnb. Everyone did their own thing at this point. Relaxed and called it a night. Next morning, kids had breakfast outside our airbnb which had a Joshua Tree right in the back yard. My kids and husband sat outside by the fire pit for a few minutes. We took a “we were here” family portrait and then….headed out on the road!
The little series below of the sunset photos of the windmills in Palm Springs through a window were all taken by my son Jacob…I absolutely love them.
It is moments like this that remind me WHY I picked up a camera in the first place. Couldn’t be more grateful for treasured time….
