Aspen and I met a few years ago via social media. She had recently moved to Bakersfield CA [my hometown] and was so amazing at engulfing herself in the community. We both eventually really grew a love for each other’s work and always talked about doing a photoshoot together. I’m so happy we finally were able to make it happen.
Having Aspen in front of my camera was so natural. It was as if we had already known each other, because we really did. Aspen has a way of bringing people close to her through social media. She is beautifully vulnerable and committed to expressing her life in all it’s variations.
Some of the things I love most about Aspen, and what I believe so much of us love about her are as follows:
Her work! I mean…its a fresh breath of pure art. There’s so much warmth and love in each photograph. You can feel it’s depth and it moves my soul every single time.
Her community driven heart. She has a way of really cheering people on and bringing them together. She’s spearheaded a few projects and has collaborated with several photographers. I love this about her because as an artist, this isn’t easy, and she does it so gracefully.
Her personality. Aspen is SO FUN. Although rather quiet about her approach to fun…you can absolutely feel her vibrancy. She made me truly excited to be with her and driving through the drive thru to get Mexican food after the shoot was a plus! Anyone who wants Mexican food after a shoot is a winner in my book!
Her willingness to share about matters that are true. Mental illness-the way that she is willing to allow people into that aspect of her life is quite impressive. She’s not trying to be impressive with it at all-just honest. She is a voice to those who don’t have the same courage to openly share and she’s a voice to those who aren’t aware of what it’s like. She has taught me so much about mental illness and how to be a support to those who struggle with it.
Her love for her husband and children. So much of her work really reflects what her heart is for her family. She mentions so much that her husband is her biggest support and meeting him in person really solidified that for me. They have such a cute family unit with the most beautiful daughters. It’s evident that being the best mom she could possibly be is one of her main priorities.
Aspen. You are incredible. Not only do you create the most breathtaking art…you paint with your life like a true artist. I appreciate being behind the camera and having the trust you gave me to share your life through this collection. I hope that it gives others a little insight into who you are, although the magnitude of who you are could never be summed up in this one series! You’re a true gem. -Rubi Z
