If you read my last post about family trip challenge my husband and I took, then you’ll understand the concept of this challenge [Read $100 Challenge: LA Edition].
The Sand Dunes at Pismo have been another surreal location that I’ve captured photos at for my clients. Something about this location made it really hard to believe that I was still in California. I knew this had to be somewhere I brought my family too.
Here’s insight on what my family thought about it: THEY LOVED IT. Well, the kids more than my husband. It get exhausting treading through the sand dunes, it’s quite a workout, but nothing impossible or anything. Once we settled it, it was just breathtaking. My boys still talk about it and still want to go back.
This was a simple one day family trip on a budget in California. It takes us about 2.5 hrs to arrive to Pismo CA from our hometown of Bakersfield CA. So gas wasn’t too expensive. When we arrived we spent a few hours on the Oceano Dunes in Pismo and we watched the sunset together there. It was super relaxing.
We left there and then had some incredible food at Sylvester’s Burgers! I mean…melt in your mouth, messy, yummy kind of burgers. Everything was just wonderful. We took the meals to go so that we could eat it in our car at the Sunset Drive-In Theatre in San Luis Obispo CA.
I think the Drive-In was such a special moment. We have a 2 year old daughter who makes going to the movie theatre’s impossible these days, but WE LOVE MOVIES. This was a win for all of us. By the time we made it to the theatre, my daughter was fussy and ready for bed, but I stayed in the car comforting her until she eventually fell asleep. Meanwhile the boys and my husband were comfortably wrapped in blankets, laying on pillows in the back of our car watching the movie. It didn’t faze anyone else that our daughter was crying and our family had a great night experiencing movies the way we used to as kids. Drive-In movie theatre’s bring back such beautiful memories for me!
Anyways…in closing…did we meet our $100 challenge?
Gas: $37
Hours of Play + Sunset experience with my Family at the Oceano Dunes: $0
Sylvester’s Burgers: $42
Drive-In: $28 [they used to charge per car back in the good ol’ days, now they charge $10 per adult, $4 per kid]
Total=$107 [we exceeded by $7, not too shabby right]
Again, I hope you just find encouragement here not to make $ a factor when creating MEMORIES with your family. This is the purpose for us challenging ourselves. We wanted to create memories that weren’t going to break the bank and get us frustrated with one another. These challenge experiences have been richer than most experiences we’ve had as a family paying a lot more $.
